From the initial idea to on-site commissioning, we take full responsibility for your custom machine engineering project.

You have a single point of contact, maximum transparency and can focus fully on your day-to-day business. We take care of the rest.

Tailored implementation instead of a one-size-fits-all approach

Before we begin development and the actual custom machine engineering project, we listen carefully:

What exactly do you need?
Which processes should be automated?
What goals are you pursuing?

We review your requirements, focus on solutions and work with you to develop a partially or fully automated machine that truly fits your process.

Cycle time, service life, profitability – considered from the outset

How long should your machine operate?
How much maintenance effort is acceptable?
And when will the investment pay for itself?

We clarify these questions with you before the project begins, so that you receive a solution that is not only technically convincing but also makes economic sense.

Precisely tailored to your requirements:

How a Custom Machine Project at esmo Works

At esmo, a custom machine project runs through three phases with defined approval points.
This means you know at every stage what we need from you and what you can expect from us.

Phase 1:
Analysis and concept

The process begins with an initial meeting under an NDA. During this meeting, we document your product, process, range of variants, target cycle time and interfaces with your existing line. Based on these requirements, we work with you to develop a machine concept including a schedule and milestones. You approve this concept before design engineering begins.

We also address potential pitfalls that may not yet be apparent in your requirements but can be decisive during later operation. During this phase, you also find out whether we are the right partner for your project—before investing additional time and budget.

Phase 2:
Design engineering and manufacturing

We design the mechanical, electrical and software systems in parallel. We validate critical sequences using simulations and, where necessary, prototypes before the first part is manufactured.

Manufacturing and assembly take place under one roof: our machining department, control cabinet construction and software development all operate in-house. This keeps communication channels short when design changes are required, without the need for coordination rounds with subcontractors.

We design the operator interface so that your operators can change variants later using recipes and parameters, without having to modify the PLC code. The Development and Engineering page shows how design engineering and manufacturing work together at esmo.

Phase 3:
Commissioning and service

For delivery, your machine is transported in modular sections on a standard truck, without requiring special transport. This keeps on-site assembly time to a minimum. This applies worldwide—we take care of customs and shipping.

After assembly, we commission the machine, train your employees directly on the system and support you during the start of series production. Afterwards, our own service team remains responsible for your machine, providing a maintenance concept, service agreement and remote diagnostics for as long as the machine is in operation.

You will also have a dedicated contact person during this phase. Find out more about what our team provides on site on the Field Service page.

Frequently asked questions – Special-purpose machinery FAQ

What is custom machine engineering?

Custom machine engineering is the area of mechanical engineering concerned with developing and manufacturing machines and systems for a specific task: a particular product, process or production line.

Unlike standard machines from a catalogue, custom machines are built as one-off solutions or in small series. At esmo, these include systems for assembly, sorting, inspection and manufacturing automation, designed to handle a wide range of product variants on a single machine.

What is the difference between a custom machine and a standard machine?

A standard machine is designed for a broad range of users and built in series; a custom machine is developed for a specific product, process and user and built as a one-off solution or in a small series. With a standard machine, you adapt your process to the machine; with a custom machine, the machine is adapted to your process.

A standard machine generally covers one work step, whereas a custom machine often combines several steps in one system, such as feeding, joining, inspection and packaging. Buying a standard machine is an order with a short delivery time; a custom machine is a development project with defined phases and approval points.

A custom machine becomes necessary when the product geometry, cycle time, number of variants or integration into an existing line cannot be accommodated using standard technology.

What are the advantages of choosing a custom machine builder with in-house manufacturing?

A custom machine builder with in-house manufacturing designs, builds, programs and supports the machine internally instead of outsourcing individual disciplines to subcontractors. For you, this means one contact throughout all phases, short communication channels when design changes are required and an in-house service team from the same company.

At esmo, design engineering, software development, manufacturing and service work under one roof. This means that your machine is considered as a whole from the outset: technically well thought out, economically viable and supportable over the long term.

This reduces friction, shortens project lead times and ensures that your machine is commissioned more quickly and reliably.

Which industries does esmo build custom machines for?

esmo's custom machines are used in component manufacturing and the consumer goods industry, as well as in pharmaceuticals and medical technology, battery technology, the semiconductor industry and consumer electronics.

The decisive factor is less the industry than the product: we automate anything that can be mechanically fed, joined and inspected—from individual components to packaged units. Examples from these industries can be found on our References page » .

Can a custom machine be integrated into an existing production line?

Yes. You receive a custom machine that integrates smoothly into your existing production environment—with no interruptions, no unnecessary effort and all the necessary interfaces.

To achieve this, we analyse your existing systems, machines and processes in detail and develop customised integration concepts. All communication protocols, interfaces and sequences are coordinated so that your new custom machine operates reliably with your production environment from day one—as if it had always been part of your production line.

Connection to your manufacturing control system is possible via OPC UA, making it vendor-independent, regardless of which control system environment is established in your production.

Can a custom machine be expanded later or adapted to new variants?

Yes. Our machines can be adapted flexibly to your requirements—both now and in the future. For you, this means shorter project lead times, lower development costs and a machine concept that can grow with your processes.

You also benefit from easier maintenance, faster service and the option of replacing or expanding individual modules as needed—without having to redesign the entire system.

With esmo's variant concept, subsequent product updates can often be accommodated on the same machine instead of requiring a new investment for every product generation.

How is a custom machine tested before delivery?

Before delivery, an esmo custom machine undergoes simulations, prototype construction and realistic test runs. You therefore receive a machine whose functions have been comprehensively tested before it is put into operation at your site.

In addition, we validate your specific requirements together with you so that your custom machine delivers exactly what it is supposed to in day-to-day operation – safely, reliably and productively.

How long does a custom machine project take?

At esmo, a custom machine project typically takes between six and twelve months from planning through commissioning, depending on the scope and complexity of your requirements.

To give you planning certainty, we create a transparent schedule with all milestones at the beginning of the project. Our established processes and close cooperation between all departments ensure that your custom machine is not only commissioned on schedule but also operates reliably.

What risks are involved in a custom machine project?

The greatest uncertainties in custom machine engineering often result from misunderstandings in the specification or unclear interfaces. This is precisely why we place such great emphasis on an intensive analysis phase in which we validate your requirements together.

Our aim is to reduce risks for you to a minimum through transparent processes, sound planning, close coordination and the support of a financially robust corporate group. Our partially modular design, realistic tests and staged commissioning help ensure that your machine operates reliably – without “unpleasant” surprises.

Which standards must a custom machine comply with?

In the EU, a custom machine must comply with the requirements of the Machinery Directive and be CE compliant. From January 2027, the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 will apply instead. Among other things, it introduces stricter requirements for documentation and traceability.

esmo provides you with a CE-compliant machine that meets all relevant safety and quality standards and is reliably and comprehensively documented. Every operator action and parameter change is logged with a timestamp and user reference. This prepares you for the documentation obligations under the Machinery Regulation.

Our processes are certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001, and we work according to internationally recognised development standards such as NASA Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This gives you confidence that your custom machine is technically, legally and regulatorily up to date.

What service is included after commissioning?

After commissioning, our service team remains your direct contact, providing fast spare-parts supply, planned maintenance, upgrades and remote diagnostics – with the aim of maximising availability and minimising downtime.

Our field service team is already there to support you beforehand, during installation, commissioning and the fine-tuning of your machine directly on the production line. We remain available afterwards as well – for support, optimisation and long-term service.

What information does a custom machine builder need to prepare a quotation?

For an initial concept, five pieces of information are particularly helpful: your product or a sample, the target output and cycle time, the range of variants, the interfaces to the existing line and your required timeframe.

We clarify everything else in an initial meeting: the technical, organisational and economic framework conditions, naturally including an NDA, which is the starting point for every project with us. You then receive a customised concept and can decide when and how you would like to start working with us.
